August 1, 2003 - Case Study - Chalfont-New Britain Installs Biosolids DryerThe Management and staff at the Chalfont New Britain Township Joint Sewage Authority (C-NBTJSA) have been collecting information on biosolids management for several years. Working with Garvey Resources, they developed a plan to heat dry 530 dry tons of biosolids per year using an indirect dryer.

July 16, 2003 - Evaluation of heat drying technology
Garvey Resources has helped clients evaluate various biosolids drying technologies. Scopes of work included liturature review, site visits, conceptual design,economic analysis and telephone interviews to collect information on performance and costs. Work also included preliminary marketing studies to identify local markets, competing products and potential revenues.

July 14, 2003 - Building Public Support for Biosolids RecyclingGarvey Resources helps clients build public support through effective communication. This requires an open door policy with the press and the public and attention to the details of recordkeeping and reporting. Over the years we have built relationships with the media, watershed associations, community groups, township supervisors, regulators, sporting organizations, and the agricultural community. Public Support is built on the local level through clear communications and responsiveness to a communities inquiries.

July 2, 2003 - Biosolids Cost Analysis for Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF)
One way to optimize process operations is to "follow the money." This project was funded by WERF in order to help WWTPs optimize their Biosolids Management programs. As a team member on a project for the Water Environment Research Foundation, Garvey Resources was asked to itemize wastewater treatment plant biosolids costs. The resultant work product will be a spreadsheet, which may be completed by virtually any utility manager and compared with other facilities. The benefits of this tracking tool over the long term include ability to compare the cost of various technologies, and identify potential areas for cost savings.

July 1, 2003 - Case Study - Pennridge
Biosolids Management Contract Development - Reviewed and compared 13 proposals for biosolids hauling and use for the Pennridge Wastewater Treatment Authority. Identified key issues to be addressed, prepared a decision matrix and evaluated each proposal in terms of overall costs. Prepared questions for and assisted at meetings with top three proposers. As a result, the Authority cut biosolids management costs by nearly 50 percent. This scope of work was expanded to include an economic analysis of aerobic digestion, belt press dewatering, alkaline stabilization and hauling liquid to a local incinerator.

July 1, 2003 - Case Study - Biosolids Management Planning
Biosolids Management Planning- Project Manager for biosolids management studies for the cities of Bethlehem, Stroudsburg, Philadelphia, Phillipsburg, Pennridge, West Chester, Manheim, Milton, Sunbury, Norristown, Lehighton, and Upper Montgomery Joint Authority, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Assisted in ongoing or completed biosolids management planning for the above-mentioned wastewater treatment plants ranging in size from 0.72 to 150 mgd. Scopes included controlling user discharges to the sewer systems, projecting biosolids quantity and quality, identifying sources of biosolids contamination, completing biosolids utilization and disposal permits, preparing plans of operations, identifying costs, evaluating alternatives, summarizing the impacts of proposed regulations, recommending disposal and utilization alternatives, and identifying the necessary biosolids processing equipment to implement the plans.

July 1, 2003 - Biosolids Odor ManagementGarvey resources has conducted both research and field implementation of odor control practices. As principal author of an EPA Fact sheet on Biosolids Odor management an extensive liturature search as well as interviews with utility managers were conducted. See this work product at http://www.epa.gov/owm/mtb/odor_control-biosolids.pdf. Ongoing work for a land application contractor includes odor control planning at land application sites and implementation of innovative techniques for odor control.

Garvey Resources assists their clients in planning and implementing biosolids management programs. We served as a technical editor on the USEPA fact sheet on land application which can be viewed at http://www.epa.gov/owm/mtb/land_application.pdf. We help our clients identify and permit land application sites, develop Environmental Management Systems, prepare annual reports to state and federal agencies, build public support, prepare budgets and feasibility studies, and identify innovative ways to optimize their programs.

May 21, 2003 - The Greatest Story Never Told - Biosolids for Mine Land ReclamationOn Wednesday, May 21, 2003, 55 people braved chilly and blustery conditions to attend the Dedication Ceremony for the completion of the initial phase of the Rattler Mountain Reclamation Project. Sponsored by the Schuylkill County Conservation District, the Babb Creek Watershed Association, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the ceremony recognized some of the many individuals and organizations that contributed to the success of the project, which was conducted on State Game Lands north of the village of Morris in Tioga County.

September 2, 2002 - A Status Report on Reed Bed TechnologyPennsylvania has more facilities using reed beds for biosolids drying than any other state in the US. This may be because we have more wastewater treatment plants than any other state! Many facilities that installed reed beds 10 to 6 years ago recently removed the first batch of dewatered biosolids from the beds or are planning to remove dried biosolids in the future. This status report is intended to give an overview of performance, O&M, and current issues and research.

December 2, 2001 - Thickening; State-of-the-Art Status Report As a subcontractor, worked on several EPA technical reports on; dissolved air flotation thickening, gravity thickening, belt press dewatering and thickening, centrifuge dewatering and thickening, recessed chamber and membrane filter press dewatering. Each report includes information on process description, applicability, advantages, disadvantages, operation, maintenance, costs and references.
