Garvey Resources participated in a Biosolids Management Plan for Bergen Point Plant in Suffolk County, NY- The plan evaluated alternatives for a Municipal waste water treatment plant which produces 300 tons per day of wastewater residuals. The scope included evaluation of a wide array of alternatives for biosolids processing, end use and disposal. The study evaluated dewatering alternatives, odor control, heat drying, alkaline stabilization, composting, incineration and landfill disposal. This included an exhaustive review of existing drying technologies and a status report on other drying facilities nation wide. The facility had been using belt presses for dewatering and this study evaluated a variety of belt presses and centrifuges in terms of performance, cost and odor causing potential. This study led to an additional project that led to side by side testing of various dewatering equipment. Another area which was evaluated in depth was alkaline stabilization. A literature and telephone survey was conducted at over twenty facilities nation wide and a five page survey was completed for each. Over twelve facilities were visited and trip reports were developed. A decision matrix was created based on input from plant managers and staff to rate the processing and end use alternatives. Work included a survey of prices for wastewater solids processing and disposal in the mid Atlantic region as well as market pricing of biosolids products. The approach was to consider the personality of the facility by using the available skills and resources unique to the facility. |
