Marketing Experience

Diane Garvey has experience marketing a variety of biosolids products over a 20 year career. The following describes a few of these projects.

Compost Marketing - As a project engineer for the Philadelphia Water Department, negotiated agreements with marketing firms to sell compost. Efforts included research and demonstration of the product, developing labels for 40 pound bags and user instructions, getting approval in various states to market a biosolids product, market analysis for use of compost in urban renewal projects, golf courses, ball fields, sod and turf farms, local agriculture, garden centers, nurseries and greenhouses. Markets were developed over a multi year period and ultimately, the biosolids product, Earth Mate, became the most coveted compost product in the Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. Homeowners pay $25 per cubic yard to have EarthMate delivered. Part of this success is attributed to creative agreements with marketing firms, and product quality control.

Home gardeners enjoy the benefits of the slow release of nutrients from the biosolids derived compost. The optimum Nitrogen to Phosphorus ratio results in large flowers supported by strong stems and a well-developed root system that makes plants more drought resistant.

Philadelphia Water Department - Garvey Resources conducted a marketing study for the Philadelphia Water Department, to evaluate the needs and potential revenue from a City operated septage and wastewater residuals receiving facility. The study included development of survey instruments, interviews, regulatory review, and economic projections.

Suffolk County -Biosolids Product Market Analysis - Developed and evaluated biosolids management alternatives for a major metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in New York. The challenge here was the close proximity of neighbors and the restrictive biosolids recycling regulations and guidelines. The work included a market analysis of various biosolids products. Products evaluated included compost, direct and indirect dried biosolids, and lime stabilized biosolids.

Alkaline Stabilized Biosolids Marketing - Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA) Marketing Plan Development of MeadowLife marketing plan

The MCUA had to develop a plan to market 150 product tons per day of the N-viro Soil product tradenamed MeadowLife. The Plan identified potential users within a 25 mile radius, developed a incentive program for repeat customers and recommended a product quality control program.

· Developed Meadowlife marketing contract with agricultural sales company

· Identified R&D needs for making certain performance claims on labels

· Obtained marketing approvals from various state Departments of Agriculture and Environmental Regulatory agencies

Innovative Beneficial Use Technology Headed a market evaluation for MSR Solutions LLC, who was identifying marketing opportunities for the BioSolids Injection (BSI) technology. Work included a tour of the Holnam Cement Plant in Lucerne Valley, CA, shadow pricing of biosolids producers costs and revenues in the west and Mid-Atlantic States and evaluating sites for proposed facilities.

Biosolids Based Road Aggregate - Project Engineer for construction and startup of the Ecorock Sludge Residue Fusion Facility for the City of Philadelphia Water Department. Provided construction management, plant commissioning, startup, testing, data evaluation, economic analysis, community relations, odor control, and product marketing services.

Alkaline Stabilized Septage - Project manager for several septage-processing facilities that wished to process and beneficially utilize an exceptional quality biosolids. Work included process development, advice in monitoring and sampling, preparation of permit applications, licensing as a specialty fertilizer or liming agent, product marketing, developing user instructions and labeling, determining agronomic rates, assistance in permit compliance, nutrient management planning and annual report preparation.

Use of OrganaGrow, a septage based product, on local grassland has dramatically improved growth.

Biosolids and Septage Market Survey - Lead investigator- for a confidential client who wanted to provide a regional biosolids management facility for municipal biosolids producers and septage haulers. The client needed to assess current biosolids processing, end use and disposal costs in order to determine the economic feasibility of his process. The proposed process was unique because, in addition to heat drying, the end product would be a custom blended fertilizer containing inoculants to enhance soil microbiology. The work also included a market analysis for heat-dried biosolids.
